Just in time for tomorrow, Brothers From Another lose their phones and grass stain their kicks. “Day Drink” is the first in BFA’s “Adventures of Los Hermanos” singles series.
NEW MUSIC: “Dreams of Gold” – Sam Lachow (feat. Raz Simone & Ariana DeBoo)
Sam Lachow is preparing to release Huckleberry (August 1), the follow-up to his Brand New Bike, an unassuming but accomplished album that put the rapper/producer/videographer on the map in 2011. Since that LP’s release, Sam has made deft moves positioning himself as one of Seattle’s most promising hip hop artists, a common fixture on those dubious “next to blow” lists that fans of Seattle rap so love to ruminate on. “Dreams of Gold” is the first official drop from Huckleberry and it features longtime collaborators Raz Simone and Ariana DeBoo.
NEW MUSIC: Soviet Goonion 3 – Avatar Darko
Avatar Darko puts the hat trick on his Soviet Goonion mixtape series. Part 3 is up for your consideration now at this location. Preview the last two leaks below.
SHOW & TICKET GIVEAWAY: clipping. at Columbia City Theater – Thursday, July 3, 2014 [CONTEST CLOSED]
clipping. is a genre-bending hip hop trio from Southern California who will undoubtedly challenge your aural senses and very idea of what rap music is capable of sounding like. Their Sub Pop debut album, CLPPNG, has been stirring a fair amount of online buzz since its release on June 10th. The group’s sound, courtesy of producers Jonathan Snipes and William Hutson, falls somewhere between a stripped-down version of Hank Shocklee’s Bomb Squad histrionics and the Neptunes, circa Hell Hath No Fury. And lead rapper Daveed Diggs sounds like a street-seasoned spoken word poet channeling Ice-T. clipping. may not be everyone’s cup of coffee, but by listening you are guaranteed to feel some sort of way, and that alone means something in a rap landscape otherwise roamed by clowns and clones.
206UP has two pairs of tickets to see clipping. on Thursday, July 3, at the Columbia City Theater (21+ only). Joining them in support will be Seattle’s very own OC Notes and Sneak Guapo, two artists that this blog rides for consistently. Enter to win a pair of tickets by filling out the form below (one entry per person) or by shooting us a tweet (@206upBlog) with the words “CLIPPING RINGS THE ALARM!” in the body of the text. Two names will be drawn at random and notified by email on Wednesday, July 2 no later than 5 pm PST.
Stream a few of clipping.’s tracks below and check out the lyric video for “Work Work” (featuring Cocc Pistol Cree) from CLPPNG.
NEW MUSIC: “Two Lips (Roses)” – The Good Sin (prod. by Shri)
Seattle — but for now New York-based — rapper The Good Sin is on the verge of completing his next project which is titled Life Before. “Two Lips (Roses)” is the first leak from that effort and it will catch you off guard: over a stuttering, electronic production by Shri, Sinseer recounts lost love with a refreshing and raw honesty.
VIDEO: “iSleep” – Thaddeus David
The prolific Moor Gang-er Thaddeus David with a new video for “iSleep,” a hymnal composition by SAT Beats from the duo’s collaborative Laws of Attraction.
NEW MUSIC: “To: Nate Dogg” – Wanz (feat. Warren G, Grynch & Crytical)
Mr. Thrift Shop, Wanz, with a new single in honor of the late great Nate Dogg, the California rap crooner to whom Wanz is most often compared. This joint already rolls along nicely in a G-funk fashion, but to make matters even better Warren G, Grynch and Crytical all join in the tribute. Grab the track here.
VIDEO: “Blue Skies” – A.K. Romero
A.K. Romero is an affiliate of the Honor Roll crew (Kung Foo Grip, Bryce Bowden, Cake and $alad, et al) and, until now, you’ve likely only seen his name in the credits of various music videos he’s brought to life for the homies. On “Blue Skies,” A.K. steps from behind the lens to the front, and sheds darkness on the otherwise pristine Seattle summer. This self-directed clip is simple and a little scary; a perfect debut for an interesting new voice. HR teammate Kayne Ortiz on the beat.
NEW MUSIC: Euphoric Tape III – Blue Sky Black Death
Blue Sky Black Death’s third installment of their Euphoric Tape series is a compilation of instrumental joints that previously featured vocals by the likes of Nacho Picasso, Deniro Farrar and Skull and Bones. Now you can rap over these jawns, too! Lucky us. Not.
NEW MUSIC: Avalon – Chev
Chev is one of a handful of Town rappers that I feel like we never hear from enough, but when we do it’s always a welcome blessing. Thanks to him for hipping me to his newest project, Avalon, a week in advance of its release, but no snaps to me for sleeping on the post until now. Go grab it for free below. It’s a tribute to the Avalon Ridge housing complex in Renton as well as the anniversary of his father’s passing on Juneteenth (the day of the EP’s actual release).
