VIDEO: “On the Hill” – The Kid Daytona

Saw this over at SW Reverb courtesy Nick Feldman. I caught wind of the LRG promotional outing to the San Juan Islands (my hometown) via a brief Twitter exchange with 9th Wonder back in January. Check out the previous post, here.

Turns out the influential streetwear company also bankrolled a music video for Bronx-based emcee The Kid Daytona. It’s an unlikely setting for a rapper from the Boogie-down, but then again I never would have predicted I’d end up living in Harlem for three years when I was a bored and clueless teen attending keg parties in the middle of the woods on Lopez Island. Funny how life goes.

The first two leaks (of five) off The Celestine Prophecy, the debut solo LP from Dyme Def’s starting centerfielder, Brainstorm. The homie isn’t as lyrically dexterous as either of his DD kin, but he still delivers every time with a penchant for expert sh-t talk that remains just this side of amiable. The Celestine Prophecy drops April 6.

VIDEO: Nardwuar vs. Macklemore @ SXSW 2011

Thanks to my homie for hipping me to this. From the SXSW 2011 files, the vexatious yet shockingly well-informed Nardwuar interviews Seattle’s own Macklemore. Is this a true sign that the artist formerly known as “Professor Macklemore” has finally “made it”? That’s unlikely. But it still must be an oddly satisfying career landmark for The Town’s currently favored son.

Fun fact: before Drake blew, Macklemore had the opportunity to hire mainstream rap’s reigning prince for a “show and verse” for the low, low price of $6,000. One of those fork-in-the-road moments that’s fun to ponder.

Click album cover to D/L.

Former TrackMeet contestant and one half of SEA rap crew, The Realest, HAVi Blaze recently dropped his first solo endeavor, the Purple & Gold The Balance Mixtape. The U-Dub alum’s rugged, streetwise flow is appealing on most tracks, but on others you can tell dude is still honing is craft. HB is yet another promising and welcome young voice in the 206 scene.

206UP.COM’s The TrackMeet (3.26.11)

CLICK :: LISTEN :: VOTE

The TrackMeet is back after a brief interlude and some consulting of blog nerds on how to further prevent repeat voters from gumming up the system. And, while it’s become clear you can never completely eliminate that from happening, I hope the steps I take from here on will at least decrease that wackness.

So here goes. Another week and three new contestants. Let the voting commence!

SHOW: Viper Creek Club w/Truckasaurus & Metal Chocolates, 4.1.11 @ Neumos

Click poster for more info.

Viper Creek Club has gotten a lot of love from 206UP.COM for its highly danceable, innovative reinterpretations of SEA hip-hop tracks. I’m not gonna link to ’em all here — that’s what the Search bar is for, dunny. Suffice to say that Mat Wisner’s side hustle has resulted in the birth of a 10-track album, ViperLust, that will drop and be celebrated live at Neumos on April 1. Get yourself to the venue for that and check 206UP.COM for the download when it goes public.

Also rocking with VCC that night will be the ever-assiduous Truckasaurus, and a new electro-rap duo known as Metal Chocolates, the ridiculously intelligent offspring of oc Notes and Rik Rude that is too smart for both the club and most progressive liberal arts colleges that I hear are all the rage right now. For a little taste of their gray matter, check the Bandcamp thingy below. MC has an interesting promotional package available, too, the spoils of which consist of accoutrement both likely and otherwise. Check for that, here.

Click image for D/L link.

“Life” is the latest track from Rockwell Powers and Ill Pill’s Kids In the Back 2. Tac-town rhymer Rockwell carries on his introspective vibe with a little help from Solzilla. Ill Pill’s production is dense and soulful — he remains one of the more under-appreciated beat makers in the Puget Sound.

TrackMeet contestants Sleep Steady dropped this video for “My Walk, Man” earlier this year. The duo of Perry Porter and CARLisDEAD came up short in the contest, but their visuals got flavor. Check for their Forty Winks EP, here.
