“Procrastination” speaks to the college undergrad, the lethargic office worker and the blunt-rolling MC alike. “The song is me pretty much my chance to craft a public record disclaimer for my ways,” the Sportn’ Life rapper jokes. This is off his upcoming Beyond The Stars EP.

NEW(ISH) MUSIC: “So Good” – La (prod. by Jester)
La shot over this loosie yesterday, or the day before, fuck it I can’t remember, it’s too hot out. Produced by Jester sometime in 2009, “So Good” is about a bomb-ass girl. The Colonel has nothing to do whatsoever with this joint, it’s just there was no track artwork and the image you see above is the second one that comes up when Google image searching “so good”. Somehow it applies, though.
NEW MUSIC: “Jump In” – Sol (prod. by The Zillas)
Sol revealed the first single from his upcoming Eyes Open EP (due September 10, 2013) yesterday. “Jump In” was produced by longtime collaborators the Zillas (Elan Wright and Nima Skeemz) and illustrates the close relationship Sol has with music. You could almost call it matrimonial.
NEW MUSIC: The Jake One-Ders – The Best Men
New ideas restored from an old format. That’s the way I’ve always described the production acumen of Jake One. Passion of the Weiss basically feels the same way, which is where I got put on to this compilation of some of Jake’s best.
NEW MUSIC: “Change Your Ways” – Thaddeus David (feat. Nacho Picasso & Steezie Nasa)
It’s a Moor Gang trifecta on Thaddeus David’s latest single, “Change Your Ways”. This from the rapper’s upcoming NoneTheLess.
NEW MUSIC: Sweat Shorts and Slushies – GMK
GMK’s positive mental attitude is infallible. After a weekend of bad news and a Monday of somber processing, a collection of instrumentals is probably the only adequate way of getting back to the grind. Sweat Shorts and Slushies appeared on SoundCloud today, the Golden Mic King’s birthday. Be good out there, family.
NEW MUSIC: “Dead Wrong” – Gift Uh Gab
Gabby goes H.A.M. over Biggie’s classic. Not many Town rappers I would trust to hold it down over this touchstone, but Gift is one.
NEW MUSIC: Melanogenesis – Down Since Day One
The underground origins of Seattle’s hip hop movement are fairly difficult to trace back on the internet, but that just means the rewards in uncovering buried local rap treasure are even greater because of it. If you have a vested interest in what happened in the days pre-Macklemore, I recommend these precious resources.
Down Since Day One is a group that was active in the mid- to late-90s, and they just released a tape called Melanogenesis which compiles songs dating back to 1994. More information on the crew and their extended collective, Original Northwest Eclectics, can be found at the Bandcamp link here. Crew member Jeremiah Williams shared all of this with me, so shout-out to him.
Also included in the press kit was the Seattle hip hop relic seen below: a scanned image of the Phunky Phat hip hop festival program held at Evergreen State College in June of ’95. That was the year I graduated high school, when my knowledge of Seattle rap didn’t extend beyond Sir Mix-a-Lot and Kid Sensation. There are some familiar names on the bill, but most remain anonymous to me. If anyone in the world wide ether has preserved digital copies of material from the groups listed, please shoot me an email.

VIDEO: “Love Shit” – Thaddeus David (dir. by Ryan Zemke)
“Love Shit” is dedicated to the smokers at Greenlake. First drop from Thad‘s upcoming NoneTheLess. Grab the track here.
NEW MUSIC: Tacos On Broadway – Brothers From Another
For your weekend consideration: Brothers From Another‘s latest, the Tacos On Broadway EP. I know it’ll sound lovely in 85 degree heat. It’s like the SEA rap gods blessed it worthy for your summer.
