NEW MUSIC: Butterfly Sauce – Larry Hawkins & Davey Jones
Sportn’ Life head DeVon Manier teased this release in the most recent edition of THE SIX which is just below — scroll down for that. Larry Hawkins and Davey Jones have teamed up for Butterfly Sauce, a fusion of rap and R&B. Grab it for free here:
NEW MUSIC: “Levels” – Dave B (feat. Jarv Dee; prod. by Kuddie Fresh)
Dave B and Jarv Dee wax poetic on industry rules. Kuddie Fresh pastes a lush sample over a classic break-beat. This from Dave’s upcoming The Doughnuts EP.
NEW MUSIC: “Back Seat (New Ride)” – Scribes (prod. by Captain Midnite)
Scribes will undoubtedly obtain the Kinda Like Drake label as more ears track his music. It’s important to remember that dude was doing his thing before So Far Gone dropped, so yeah…smoke that in your pipe. Here he updates the whole “back seat of my Jeep, let’s swing an episode” thing fairly well. Captain Midnite on the beat.
NEW MUSIC: The Shadowed Diamond – Key Nyata
Key Nyata is one of Seattle rap’s new young guard. He’s a contributing member of the ubiquitous Raider Klan and a burgeoning blog darling. The Shadowed Diamond is his latest release and features production from P Smoov and guest appearances by Nacho Picasso, Avatar Darko and Dave B, among others.
As an aside…
There’s much hand-wringing around Town about the “Seattle sound” with the general consensus being that there isn’t one. Key is a prime example of that: he strays far from virtually all of his peers with deeply experimental beats that are more mood and feeling than typical rap set pieces. There’s never been a better time for Seattle rap to come into its own; hip hop is democratized to its greatest degree in history which rewards a fiercely independent spirit like the one we have here.
NEW MUSIC: Hawaii Live, Yo! – EarDr.Umz
The 808 and 206 share familiar vibes and split-life living rappers like basement smoke sessioners share joints. That is to say: often and easily. Resident selector and hip hop activist EarDr.Umz was the latest to make a trip out the Pacific and he came back with this collection of tunes on his mind. Some of it is familiar, some not so, but it all adds up to a nice listen.
NEW MUSIC: Talk Ain’t Cheap – Royce The Choice
Royce The Choice selected some (ahem) choice production partners for his latest EP, Talk Ain’t Cheap. Vitamin D, Kuddie Fresh and GMK all lend beats, and this blog’s favorite Town rapper of the moment, Porter Ray, shows up on “For The Jeeps”. You can also catch Royce getting a bit of national burn on DJ Mustard’s Ketchup mixtape.
NEW MUSIC: Still Different – Peta Tosh
Peta Tosh, the man with the very different MC name, recently dropped an album confirming as such: Still Different. Preview and download it below. And check out a video of his interview on KUBE’S Sunday Night Sound Sessions with DJ Hyphen and J. Moore.
VIDEO: “Blocka (Don’t Block My Shine)” – MADlines (feat. Gigante; dir. by Genuienzo; prod. by BeanOne)
You already know MADlines as one half of Canary Sing, and soon you will know her as a solo artist. “Blocka (Don’t Block My Shine)” is the first single from the (now) Oakland-based singer/MC’s upcoming Love Child EP. BeanOne on the beat and Gigante with the cameo.
NEW MUSIC: “Say So” – Ka.lil (feat. Jills Laxamana; prod. by Magic Mouth)
Ka.lil recently dropped off “Say So”, a new track featuring Jills Laxamana and the production work of Magic Mouth, the most recent addition to the Wandering Worx team. If you missed Ka.lil’s latest, Between Saturday Night And Sunday Morning, shame on you (and here’s a chance to redeem yourself).
