John Crown is the best emcee from Tacoma you’ve never heard of. He’s an everyman rapper with a down-to-earth style that’s easy to respect and ride for. JC reminds me a little of the Philly Freezer minus the grating voice and with an added dash of Red Wing Boot ruggedness. His upcoming project is called Coffee and Beats — watch for it. #LatePass. John Crown’s flow is blue collar and workman-like, fitting considering his Tac-town roots. Before I Wake You Up is a six-track EP consisting of sample-heavy throwback production and Crown’s down-to-earth raps about life and love as an underdog. He has one of those beautifully pure flows that’s a little rough around the edges — unforgiving in its ruggedness but as natural as breathing, like the Pacific Northwest’s own version of Freeway.
