NEW MUSIC: 5 Good Reasons – Sam Lachow & Raz Simone
Here’s something worthwhile: Sam Lachow (NYC by way of SEA) and Raz (one of the Town’s finest new voices) collaborate for 5 Good Reasons, a pentagonal collection of wide-ranging party- and street-life numbers. Sam is a legitimate musical force to be reckoned with and Raz is worthy of all local hype bestowed thus far. Together they’ve crafted a remarkably thoughtful EP that I would count among the region’s best this year. Get it for free here.
UPDATE (1:15 pm PST, 9.24.12): The duo just dropped the latest video from the EP. “Coyotes” was directed by Sam Lachow, Raz and Avi Loud. Peep game below.
VIDEO: “Nothing’s Gonna Change” – Sam Lachow & Raz (feat. B Skeez)
At first glance Sam Lachow and Raz seem like an odd pair for a collaboration. Cast expectations aside, however, for their new track, “Nothing’s Gonna Change,” the first drop from the duo’s upcoming 5 Good Reasons EP (September 17). Everything works here, from the live instrumentation to the chemistry between the two MCs.
VIDEO: “Keep it Sweet” – Mac Shine (feat. Nacho Picasso)
Videos run the world today. Mac Shine (one fourth of swag rap crew The Mile Fly Club) with a clip for “Keep it Sweet.” Town movers and shakers Nacho Picasso (bars) and Sam Lachow (lens) put in work too.
(New York City fam: Make sure to watch Sam do his thing at the Highline Ballroom, August 19.)

Retaliation, revenge and get-back. Sort of. Sam Lachow and cohorts seek reprisal from the ex. Off Brand New Bike.
VIDEO: “All For You” – The Good Sin & 10.4 Rog (dir. by Sam Lachow)
The Good Sin has one of the most promising voices in area rap and this track highlights why. That deep baritone hovers over producer 10.4 Rog’s uncluttered atmospherics like a cumulus cloud over shimmering Lake Washington. Check out why this blog called their Late one of the area code’s best albums of 2011.
VIDEO: “Hash Muffins” – Sam Lachow (feat. Sky Blaow & Ryan Campbell)
Young cats love hot girls that play video games and blow trees. Man, I’m off that. Non-profit, post-colonial literary geeks are my grown-man BI. I kid, though, there’s always room for the juvenile. Sam Lachow’s “Hash Muffins” clip is weed rap playfully sex-ified.
What I want to know is how does Detooz Films manage to get around so much these days? Oh, right, human cloning.
VIDEO: “LittleManBigCity” – Sam Lachow
There are no children to this blogger’s name, but if there were, best believe I would have a very hard time raising them in a city like New York. This place is big, bad, hungry, and deigns not to the weak of heart. Seattle son and current New York City resident Sam Lachow understands this and “LittleManBigCity” is his cautionary tale/proverbial slug to the arm of his little brother, Charlie, who finds himself young and bright-eyed in a town known for making and destroying the dreams of its residents, age notwithstanding. Be that as it may, I wouldn’t trade the last four years living in this city for anything, and I would wager that Sam and Charlie feel exactly the same way.

VIDEO & DOWNLOAD: “Gary Payton” – Sam Lachow (feat. Sky Blaow & B Skeez)
Seattle and New York affiliate Sam Lachow’s recent video and single, “Gary Payton,” isn’t exactly an adequate representation of the rest of the music on the do-everything MC/producer/director’s debut album, Brand New Bike (available now on iTunes). That’s a shame, because the somewhat amusing but mostly inane frat boy rap of “Gary Payton” might turn some heads off before giving the rest of the LP a fair shake. Don’t let the Asher Roth-lite stylings of the video turn you away.
Brand New Bike is a lighthearted, breezy ode to weed, summertime leisure, and the DIY rap lifestyle. It’s impressively capable, especially the production which features live instrumentation and a refreshing simplicity that never over-complicates matters. As for the artist, Sam Lachow will never be a threat to immobilize a competing MC (his delivery is like a more robust version of State Of The Artist’s Hyphen8d), but what he lacks in God-given aesthetic, he counters with a quick wit and above-average technical skill. BNB might just suit your needs for that Saturday night deck party, an event Lachow would be happy to crash.
