Uhh, yeah, this one threw me off just a tad. Take a listen and tell me what’chu think. It’s a song called “One Time” by a lil’ Canadian pop singer named Justin Bieber (top) and featuring Renton’s finest, Brainstorm.
Here’s the download and here’s the (ridiculous) video — sans Brain, thank heavens.
Is it a mixtape remix? A child star’s pre-meditated attempt at capturing street-cred? A possible career-turn for Brainstorm? I remain skeptical, but I’m giving B the benefit of the doubt here. (The kid is down with Usher after all, so you can’t really hate…Can you?)
(WARNING: Under no circumstance should you listen to this song more than twice in a row, as it’s grade-A certifiable kiddie-pop crack and the hook will get stuck in your brain [ha!]. You’ve been warned.)

This is an obvious attempt to get some attention by Brain (why is Dyme Def listed?). I put this along the same lines of when Plies did a remix to Snoop’s & Akon’s “i’m F’n you” back in ’06. He built some steam with it and ended up getting signed and got something out of it. I don’t hate on the move, but why would brain choose this rando song?!? He might as well do a remix to a Billy Gilman song. I would think you would get clowned on for doing this.
That video does have 8 million plays though. Maybe he figures if he is the first to get up on a “remix” it will spark some interest. BTW adding a 16 bar verse does not classify as a remix in my books. Also, his verse isnt even that hott. It’s quite.to.the.beat.like.a.nur.ser.y.rhyme. This dude did do big tune, right? Then why did he not add something to the beat so it could truly be called a remix. It’s a weak attempt to get some mainstream attention, because let’s be honest, i can’t imagine the renton highlands bumpin’ this.
Definitely won’t be bumped in the Highlands. But on the Sammamish Plateau? Probably!
Folks on Twitter are recognizing Brain for being so “versatile”. Since when is doing a guest-shot on a kiddie-pop song considered “versatile”? Isn’t it usually called “selling out”?
I do hope Dyme Def blow up nationally some day. I just hope it happens based on their own hip-hop merits and not because of some contrived R&B child star who’s image is engineered by the industry.
