Hometown rap hero Grynch dropped his new EP, Timeless, today. And, as the title suggests, dude rhymes about many things in hip-hop that are indeed timeless. Those things include:
a) Shaking off haters (“So Long”)
b) The party life (“All I Wanna Do” featuring Sol)
c) Shorties (“Out of Sight, on My Mind”)
and of course the age-old favorite, d) Hustling to get respect and one’s due shine in the rap game (“Randy The Ram”).
VIDEO: “Clap, Toast, Cheer” – Nautilus
#NewShit. Born in Austin, TX, raised in Seattle, Nautilus is new to this blogger. It’s hard not to smile while watching his new video, “Clap, Toast, Cheer.”
DOWNLOAD: “Fix You” – The Physics feat. Kelsey Bulkin
Something tells me the sounds on Digital Wildlife, the upcoming project by The Physics, will come as an unexpected surprise to fans of the crew acclimated to the previous Golden Era heritage rap of Future Talk and High Society. The stutter-step, electro-soul/rock bounce of “Fix You” is slightly reminiscent of TV On The Radio’s perfectly well-honed dissonance. Featuring playful vocals by Thig Nat, or Monk Wordsmith, or both (it’s hard to tell) and Kelsey Bulkin (of Made In Heights), this track is unexpectedly addictive. The laws of The Physics have changed, Seattle.
VIDEO: “Keep Bouncing” – Blueprint
Posted here because I do what I want. Who cares if it ain’t Town rap? And also ’cause the bar in this clip reminds me of the one I was stumbling around in in Brooklyn this weekend. Blueprint is that dude. Adventures in Counter-Culture coming April 5th on Rhymesay…ah, f-ck it, you know who it is.
BREAKING NEWS: Blue Scholars Signs With “The People”
Blue Scholars’ third full-length album, Cinemetropolis, is scheduled for a June 2011 release and it stands to be their most innovative collection of beats and rhymes yet. Drawing on inspiration from their mutual love of film, Sabzi (beats) and Geologic (rhymes) will create a “reverse soundtrack,” whereby the songs of Cinemetropolis influence a subsequent collection of video and multimedia projects.
The seminal Town crew is asking the people (and by “the people,” I mean “us”) to help bring this project to fruition, setting a goal of raising $25,000 in 45 days to help fund the project. Blue Scholars is perhaps the only current SEA hip-hop group with a large and devoted enough following to make something like this possible. In conjunction with Kickstarter, folks can pledge cold hard cash (as little as $1) toward the Cinemetropolis cause. In return, various types of swag are proffered.
Some might chalk this effort up to unchecked rap hubris, but if you know anything about Blue Scholars’ fiercely independent history, you’ll know this is an honest attempt at connecting with fans on a more personal level and another way to avoid the f-ckery of major label machinations. (The campaign personally reminds me of when my moms used to donate money to PBS during its annual pledge drives. Same thing.)
Consider making a donation (and read more about the Cinemetropolis project), here.
DOWNLOAD: The Lentil Soup EP – Gabriel Teodros & DJ Ian Head
Gabriel Teodros (real name, no gimmicks) and DJ Ian Head bless us with this freebie, The Lentil Soup EP, which is in part an appetizer for GT’s next full-length, Colored People’s Time Machine (dropping sometime in the next 299 days).
GT’s pastiche of lyrical content is a result of his ongoing continental navigations. Some local cats see fit to remain stationary, and for that their music suffers. Gabriel’s lens is wider than most SEA folk and consequently so is his lyrical scope. Hip-hop is international now, dunny. If you ain’t movin’ you ain’t winnin’.

Rockwell Powers and Ill Pill hustle hard with their new track, “I Swear,” from the soon-to-be-dropping Kids In The Back 2. Help comes courtesy of those great “Connectors” (as Malcolm Gladwell would call them), State Of The Artist.

CLICK :: LISTEN :: VOTE
One more week, one more TrackMeet winner: congratulations to Props with his track “Born To Get It.” The Indianapolis native who is relatively new to the 2-0-6 scene ran away with the voting. Props’ team wouldn’t release the track for download on 206UP.COM but there is plenty of free music on his official website, here.
Three more tracks await your voting below:

VIDEO: “Coming Up” – Willie Joe feat. Dice
Caught this over at the homie Gabriel Teodros’ internet crib. Willie Joe is a native of Cali and lives in the ATL. Dice is also from The Killa but now lays her head in The Town. Like a slew of other lovely local double X chromosomes, Dice has been on the bubble for a minute but, for whatever reason (I blame motherf-ckin’ patriarchy), hasn’t blown up. Ladies first, I say.
VIDEO: “I Dip” – E-Dawg feat. Tryfe & Emmanuel
Town OG, E-Dawg, aims “I Dip” (featuring Tryfe and Emmanuel) for the radio waves and high-def flatscreens. The unintentional comedy scale is nearly broken here. I wonder how much Sir-Mix-A-Lot charged E to use his cars in this clip.
The hook is now stuck on repeat in my head. Thanks, fellas.
