NEW MUSIC: The Transition EP – KeyBoard Kid

Officially out May 7 on Donkey Pitch, The Transition EP is being called KeyBoard Kid’s “first official solo release” — a descriptive that essentially no longer has any meaning. But whatevs. Preview the album below.

(Shout-out to Hugh doin’ his damn thing, and where I found this.)

NEW MUSIC: Earthbound – Copperwire

Meklit Hadero, Burntface and Seattle’s own Gabriel Teodros form the musical union/futuristic space narrative, Copperwire. Melding elements of hip-hop/R&B, social justice and science fiction, the trio is set to release their debut album, Earthbound, tomorrow.

Amidst the tales of hijacked spacecraft, time travel and extraterrestrial superpowers are hardcore beats, rhymes and melodies rooted very much in a fundamental concern for homo sapiens everywhere.

NEW MUSIC: EXIT 163A – Sabzi

The always generous and gregarious Sabzi unleashed this massive collection of new/old instrumentals from his vault on the first day of Spring 2012. From his Townfolk website:

NAW RUZ MOBARAK!

it’s the first day of Spring and i have new old instros direct from the TOWNFOLK studio to the holes above your earlobes.

in the spirit of cleaning house, i’ve dug even deeper in the crates (ok, computer folders) and compiled another tape of unreleased beats—some of which date back almost 9 years.  this one is massive: a collection of beaterinos, slappers, nuggets, sketches, and concepts (finished and unfinished) never before heard until now and available for a limited time at a special New Year price of 5 bucker bills.

wishing you a happy and prosperous year, full of fresh starts and new beginnings, son!

LISTEN: awE naturalE – THEESatisfaction

The title of THEESatisfaction’s debut album on Sub Pop Records (due March 27) is stylized to read: awE naturalE. Group members Cat and Stas have universal style in spades, though, so fanciful alphabetic manipulation is unnecessary whenever concerned with this duo.

The record in question is streaming in its entirety over at NPR Music and I suggest you click on over now. The LP is short enough to listen to during your lunch break, but its musical, lyrical and spiritual depths plumb more toward eternity. It’s as obsessively advanced and enlightened as Shabazz Palaces’ Black Up and, just like that triumph in artistic spirit, it was grown in your own backyard, Seattle. Take joy in this one.

NEW MUSIC: Respect – Fatal Lucciauno

Fatal Lucciauno dropped his sophomore full-length, Respect, yesterday via Sportn’ Life Records. I won’t say much here since a full album review by me is coming soon (via Potholes In My Blog), except that this record is vastly different than what most fans of Seattle rap are used to. It’s underground as hell, but not in the skater/backpacker aesthetic that most hip-hop in the city trends toward.

Fatal’s is a perspective that Seattle likes to pretend doesn’t exist, the pathos of a man familiar to most through fictionalized accounts on HBO and sensationalized blather on the local news. Respect is realer, rawer and more vital than the status quo this city tries so hard to maintain. There’s dirt in your own backyard, Seattle. Shit that no amount of new food co-ops or neighborhood clean-up days can wipe clean.

NEW MUSIC: Imagination EP – Parker & Lace Cadence

Parker and Lace Cadence collaborated on the Imagination EP. It’s five tracks of club-ready beats and nightlife-themed lyrics. Existing somewhere between the Greatest Night Out Ever and I Guess That Was An Okay Saturday, I listened to this on the subway yesterday and promptly forgot about it a day later — sort of like the nights out they describe on the EP. Ho hum.
