A few of the competitors at tomorrow night’s Red Bull Emsee battle have been featured on 206UP.COM’s The TrackMeet. Displaying skills on a single track is a far cry from being able to represent live. Go watch these budding MC’s try to eat each others’ lunch tomorrow night at The Crocodile.

SHOW REVIEW: Blue Scholars Cinemetropolis Album Release Party @ Neumos on 6.18.11

At Saturday’s sold-out Cinemetropolis Album Release Party, the second of a two-night run at Neumos, Blue Scholars had Seattle hip-hop fans eating out of their proverbial hands, as has been the case at all of the duo’s local shows for the last six years or so. The energetic all ages crowd followed Geo and Sabzi’s lead for nearly an hour and a half as the crew marched through a set list heavy on new material with a few select older favorites.

VIDEO: “Fou Lee” – Blue Scholars

Geo is one of the best lyricists at taking simple ideas and extrapolating them into something larger and more complex. On “Fou Lee” one of the best cuts from Cinemetropolis, the name of the venerable Beacon Hill Vietnamese grocery store is used as an emblem for the source of Blue Scholars’ inspiration and sustenance, literally and figuratively. This is an intimate Town jam, in which the best reference is the MC Foods corner store at Alaskan and Columbian. I always get a laugh when I pass that spot. Directed by Canh Solo.

Cinemetropolis officially drops tomorrow, but if you ain’t got it already, then you probably aren’t a fan. The live jump-off is this Friday and Saturday.

DOWNLOAD: “Run & Tell Dat” – Saturday Morning Cartoon (feat. Silver Shadow D, Dee.aLe & DeRoxs)

Fresh off their debut album, Cereal Box Superheroes, Saturday Morning Cartoon and 206UP.COM bring you the exclusive premier of the crew’s new single, “Run & Tell Dat.”

Blending new and classic styles, this posse cut connects dots between Northwest hip-hop artists Jonnie Storm and Nitro Fresh of SMC and the venerable flows of veteran MC’s Silver Shadow D, Dee.aLe and DeRoxs. As Nitro himself tells it:

Silver Shadow D, Dee.aLe (DMS) and DeRoxs (Wolfpakk) are like brothers.  As you can hear lyrics by Silv, they have been knowing each other for nearly 20 years.  But, according to Silv, this song is actually the first song he had ever recorded with Dee.aLe.  Jonnie had known these guys when he used to be known as Jon Doe, at the freestyle ciphers, shows, etc.  I, personally, got a chance to first meet Silver Shadow D and Dee.aLe at RC tha Trackaholiq’s CD release party.  I was mesmerized by their energy on stage, and immediately decided to work with them.  I met DeRoxs about 2 years ago, at the show.  I gave him my beat CD, and about a year later he contacted me, saying he wanted to work with me for his upcoming album.  Now, his upcoming album “Checkmate” is due June/July 2011, produced by myself, Silver Shadow D, and few others.  It was truly my pleasure to have all these veteran MCs on one of my tracks.

Catch Saturday Morning Cartoon at the Arts In Fusion show at Rendezvous this Friday (5.27.11) at 9:30 pm. Click the flyer below for more details and download the track below.

DOWNLOAD: Altered State EP – State Of The Artist

Click album cover for D/L link.

State Of The Artist dropped their new FREE EP today, Altered State. It’s a seven-track collection of anthemic electro-infused hip-hop. The title of the EP is appropriate as the album represents a shift in sound, away from the easy-going party rap of their debut LP, SeaCal, toward a moodier synth-heavy club aesthetic.

With all in-house production by group member Parker Joe, Altered State mostly rejects hip-hop’s traditional norms, so from that standpoint it doesn’t please the way SeaCal did. You can’t knock a group for growing, however, and there is plenty new to appreciate on AS.

SOTA will be heading out on tour with Mad Rad. Check the flyer below for your town:

Best live look yet for Shabazz Palaces? Quite possibly. The enigmatic crew brings its live presentation to The Apple for the third (?) go-round, this time to one of the Lower East Side’s most venerable party establishments, Santos Party House. Oh yeah, the equally talented Cat and Stas of THEESatisfaction will dazzle, as well. This one’s in my own backyard, so how couldn’t I?
