The Otherside, coming soon from the Mad N.W. team, whose most visible figure is Olympian and Northwest local, JR Celski. Seattle hip-hop hopefully gets its due shine in this promising documentary. Consider donating to the cause, here.

VIDEO: “Shadowboxing” – Brainstorm
I like this clip. It’s simple. Brain and a few of his homies standing outside an undisclosed location, probably making more than a few white people really super nervous as they walk by. The track f-ckin’ bumps, too. Off the forthcoming Celestine Prophecy.
VIDEO & DOWNLOAD: “Pack It Up” – Grieves & Budo
#LateWidit. Of all the Valentine’s Day drops, this was my favorite. A video for Grieves and Budo’s “Pack It Up,” in which neither Grieves nor Budo actually appear. (Or do they?) (Directed by Mr. Man Of Many Talents, Griff J.)
VIDEO: “Faded” – Eighty4 Fly
From (two of) the hardest working men in Town rap, emcee Eighty4 Fly and director Jon Augustavo, here’s the music video for “Faded” from Eighty4’s 1st Class In Fly World. (Read my not-so-subtle criticism of that album, here.) The first two-thirds of the clip is like a visit to Cameo City, with members of the local hip-hop community trying on JonJon’s camera rig to varying degrees of amusement and then, aw SNAP!, the last third culminates in…well, I won’t give it away here. Just watch.
VIDEO: “So Ghetto” – PROPS
#NewTownShit. Meet the emcee PROPS, an Indianapolis native currently putting in hip-hop work in Seattle with Vitamin D. This clip is an introduction to the rapper’s forthcoming mixtape (which your loyal blogger will try to determine the name of). PROPS’ confident easy rasp flows like concrete gravy over Vitamin D’s beautiful grime on “So Ghetto,” the first single from said ‘tape. Get acquainted before your friends do.
(A couple of other things: the name of this joint immediately reminded me of this; a bold move giving your first major SEA track the same title as a Jay-Z/Premier collabo. Also, what the hell is “concrete gravy?”)
VIDEO: “Lights” – Kublakai
Kublakai (who you might also recognize as 33.3% of every local college student’s favorite Town crew, The Let Go) dropped this clip a few days ago. Looks like the homie is making a belated push to get his massively under-appreciated 2009 EP, Lights For The Dark Nights back out into Seattle’s collective conscious. In case you missed it before, click on the album cover below for the D/L link.
VIDEO: “Sandwitches” – Tyler, The Creator & Hodgy Beats of Odd Future on Jimmy Fallon
So here’s the clip everyone was clamoring about. In case you’re wondering (and in case you’re sitting at your work computer and can’t watch at the moment): Odd Future delivered the goods.
Best parts: ?uestlove appearing like the Zen Drum Master that he is, even as Tyler and Hodgy bring forth chaos all around him; Tyler going apesh-t over at Jimmy Fallon’s desk, scaring the poor white girl (and 99% of Middle America) half to death; an old-ass (looking) Mos Def screaming “SWAG SWAG SWAG!!!” into the camera near the end, a desperate attempt to retain his relevance with the younger set (“See kids! I’m still cool, too!” Don’t worry, Mos, we still love you.)
And in case you missed it, here’s something else you should watch.
DOWNLOAD: Problematic EP – Logics
Logics (aka Young Ghangas) dropped his Problematic EP a few days ago. Click here or the album cover above for the FREE download. I still contend that “Focused” is one of the best locally-released tracks of young 2011 (and that Logics and Geo should do an EP together — material that lets Pro Brown tap into his inner ‘hood identity, an incarnation that we all know exists but hasn’t yet shown itself, at least not fully).
Here are the visual for “Stars & Beyond” (featuring Eighty4 Fly and Brainstorm), one of the tracks off Problematic:
Remember those low-budget Death Row videos that were all over MTV before the label blew? Yeah, this is slightly reminiscent of those: lots of talent and severely limited production value.
No matter. When Logics spits “I represent Asians/Never used it as a crutch,” all is forgiven by this blogger. (I’m Korean — what you ain’t know?) It’s also pretty quaint how they use the Museum Of Flight as the clip’s backdrop. And curious that there isn’t a single neighborhood dimepiece in sight. Women are allowed in the US Air Force too, you know…
VIDEO: “I Love My Life” – Black Stax
This is the first video from Black Stax’s Talking Buildings, the excellent debut album from Seattle’s live hip-hop/R&B standard-bearers. It’s the simple things in life that are the most valuable, like friends, family and food. The recorded track already said it and the visuals serve as sweet reinforcement. Vitamin D on the beat, vocalist Felicia Loud delivers the message.
VIDEO: “Yonkers” – Tyler, The Creator
WARNING: this video is not suitable for children or grandparents, YOU or any of US. This is some f-ckin’ ill sh-t. You know who it is.
