NEW MUSIC: Build – Rockwell Powers & DJ Phinisey
Rockwell Powers and DJ Phinisey have officially released their first full-length project together. Build is live and streaming below and available for purchase if you see fit. It’s by far Rockwell’s most soulful effort to date. He strikes a nice balance between the astute societal observations of his past work and just good ol’ hardcore rap shit.
NEW MUSIC: Doc Watson The Instrumental Album – Spekulation
Rapper/producer/author/actor/activist/barista* Spekulation dropped his Doc Watson The Instrumental Album on Monday. Thirteen shots for you to freestyle rap to. If that’s your thing.
(*Only four of these six things are true. As far as I know, anyway.)
NEW MUSIC: Bright Vices – The Flavr Blue
Electro-pop trio The Flavr Blue released their new EP yesterday, Bright Vices. You can preview and download it below. Click over to Potholes In My Blog to read some more stuff I wrote about it.
NEW MUSIC: “The Golden” – Alisha Roney
We’re having a decidedly non-hip hop day over here at 206UP.COM. That’s okay, though, what better way to take a respite from rap’s hard knocks than with a crafty new single from singer/songwriter Alisha Roney, she of the numerous outstanding guest shots from The Good Sin’s “Eye 2 Eye” to The Physics’ latest “Am I Crazy”. Alisha goes for dolo on “The Golden”, and fans of R&B/soul are all the better for it.
NEW MUSIC: The Finger & The Moon – Budo
Budo’s new album, The Finger & The Moon, finds some things familiar and some things not. First, the self-produced LP is rich with sonic textures and (at times) dense fragments of musical thought that refuse to be beautiful at first listen, but reward later with repeated visits; it’s this ability that places the multi-instrumentalist in the category of musician rather than mere producer.
Secondly, Budo adds the “vocalist” tag to his repertoire, here singing on all ten of TF&TM‘s tracks. He doesn’t have a great voice — think of a sort of poor man’s Leonard Cohen for the millennial/internet set — but the combination of his spoken thoughts (which are often intensely personal) in addition to the musical help complete the whole picture.
Stream and download The Finger & The Moon below, and check out the video for the track “Fremont” below that.

NEW MUSIC: “Broken Singer’s Blues 2.0” – Jasper T (feat. John Crown; prod. by Trox)
Singer, songwriter and guitarist Jasper T mashes genres with “Broken Singer’s Blues 2.0”, the first single in a lead-up to the remixed version of his debut album, The Sweet Dark Pt. 1. Here he enlists hip hop producer Trox and reunites with Tacoma’s John Crown for a new take on his original track. Jasper and Crown previously collaborated on the acoustic “Julie” which you can find back here.
NEW MUSIC: “Humanoid Void” – Hightek Lowlives (feat. Gabriel Teodros)
R&B/electro outfit Hightek Lowlives dropped this gem this morning. “Humanoid Void” seeks to bridge the gap between the organic and the digital. If it sings in ones and zeroes, does it make a sound? Gabriel Teodros lends the cellular weight via deft guest bars.
NEW MUSIC: “Constant” – RA Scion (feat. Daniel Blue; prod. by Rodney Hazard)
RA Scion’s new album, Lumberjack Beard, is set to drop October 31. Jokes. The record is actually called The Sickle and The Sword and it’s produced entirely by New Yorker Rodney Hazard. Different sounds, different motions, TS&TS promises a more ethereal, ambient vibe. Check the video for the first single, “Constant”, filmed on beautiful Orcas Island and directed by Casey Sjogren.
