DOWNLOAD & REVIEW: Charles – Chev

Somewhere inside Chev’s 17-track debut album is an outstanding eight to ten song EP, dying to get out. That’s not to say the long-time coming Charles is a disappointment. Rather it’s a greater reflection of an MC who’s had much on his mind for a minute now, too much to adequately express on a few standout guest shots on tracks by more established Town artists (summarized well by the rapper himself, here).

The first time Chev really caught my ear was on “Certitude” (a joint from Common Market’s 2008 Tobacco Road). His deep, commanding delivery added weight to Sabzi’s synth-heavy composition and his reality rap point-of-view counterbalanced RA Scion’s philosophical wanderings. There’s much more of that grounded perspective on Charles. Chev’s preferred lyrical topic is observations on the hustle, and the fact that he’s in the midst of his own makes him an expert. “Simple Math” is an engaging opening track with commanding head-nod courtesy of Jester. “Beau” pays tribute to lost lives and features a dusty jazz-inflected beat by Def Dee. My favorite song here, though, is the Sabzi-produced “Yesterday” which takes Chev’s nostalgic reflections and Hollis Wong-Wear’s swirling guest vocals, and plants them firmly in early 90s R&B territory.

Charles does go on too long, and Chev over-extends himself with the number of verses on a few tracks, but it’s hard to fault him for putting in work. If you’re first hearing him on this album, it’s his vocal aesthetic that will immediately grab you: a low-pitched, technically proficient flow. Chev’s is a fairly new voice in the local scene that resonates much louder than those of many more well-established ones.

Here then, is the culmination of 15 weeks of 206UP.COM’s own version of Battle of the Bands, otherwise known as The TrackMeet. Initiated in mid-January of this year, the format was simple: Each week, three tracks from (relatively) unknown local hip-hop artists were pitted against each other in a Gladiatorial-style showdown for ULTIMATE RAP SUPREMACY. Actually, it’s just a series of week-long polls where readers get to vote on their favorite track, and the only award for winning artists is bragging rights on their Twitter and RSS feeds.

In any case, all of the entrants involved put in good work and we here at 206UP.COM hope the feature served as a showcase for everyone hustling musical product in The Town. As promised, here is the free compilation mixtape of all past winners. Download, share and if you like what you hear, seek out more. 2012 will see the beginning of a new round of TrackMeet competitions, so if you’re an artist looking to submit a new joint, hit me up at: 206upblog@gmail.com.

(And while we’re at it, if you missed previous 206UP.COM mixtape compilations, you can grab those here and here for FREE, dunny!)

VIDEO: “Fire Red” – Khat

Every Khat video I’ve seen thus far has been a visual feast of either ambiguous sex or drug non-sequiturs, which are, you know, kinda cool. Sometimes. This one for “Fire Red” has the closest thing resembling a narrative. Affecting performances by the actors involved squeezes an ocean of allegory from the beautiful and disturbing imagery.

Khat has an EP out, too. It’s called Traphouse and you can grab it for free, here.

Wale is coming through Neumos this Friday. In advance of that show check out this track he did with area rhymer Props, whose hustle with the Planet of MARz collective is coming along quite well, as he would have you understand it. Bizarro Wale failed to hook me with Ambition and his verse here is meh. The beat knocks, however, but that’s just a daily operation for Vita.

DOWNLOAD: Dookiebraid Soul (Re-release) – Candidt

Haven’t listened to this yet, but I figured it couldn’t wait. This weekend Candidt Bandcamped his 1996 “hood classic” Dookiebraid Soul. Consider listening to this a homework assignment for Seattle rap fans who think this sh-t started with Blue Scholars in oh-four.

In 1996 I was a sophomore at Western, probably coming to terms with the fact that all my favorite rap albums from that year originated on the East Coast. Maybe if I’d been hip to what was happening underground in Seattle I wouldn’t have had such a crisis.

Tacoma’s The BreakLites on some grimier sh-t than found on this past summer’s Robots and Daytons, an album that I vibed out to once or twice and need to revisit. The crew tells me this is the advance single from their next EP, Rapface. Also, buy the trio a beer when you see them on tour this December.

DOWNLOAD: The Durden Papers Vol. 1 – Xperience

I’m about halfway through this new free release from Olympia’s Xperience, but already I can say I digs it. Perhaps not as much as the MC/singer’s previous for-profit offering, William The VIII, which, upon re-listening, has shown itself to be 2010’s most slept-on regional release. The Durden Papers Vol. 1 is (so far) more hyped and party-oriented, mostly due to producer BeanOne’s stripped-down slap. Catch XP on tour with long-time homies Macklemore and Ryan Lewis.
